Big night from Mariah Stacona in Northwest U come from behind win

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Trailing by seven points with four minutes to go, Northwest University would go on a 13-3 run to come from behind to defeat Corban University, 78-73, for a Cascade Conference win.

The Eagles jumped out early in the first quarter and found themselves leading 18-9 at the end of the period. But, Corban came back strong in the second quarter with 24 points and an 8-3 run at the end of the half would close Northwest U’s lead to 34-33.

The Warriors would continue where they left off in the second quarter as NU would go cold, hitting just 1 of their first 6 shots. A 10-4 run after Kendra Murphy’s tip in would give Corban a 44-38 lead with 5:34 left in the quarter and a 59-55 lead at quarter’s end.

Corban would continue to lead through the final period and with 5:05 on the clock would stretch their lead to 70-60 after Shaelie Burgess’ lay up in the paint. Andie Kristinat would start the Eagles’ comeback with a 3-pointer at the 4:20 mark, cutting Corban’s lead to 7 at 70-63. The Warriors would then go cold hitting just one of their final 10 shots. A 3-pointer by Mariah Stacona with 1:31 to go would put NU into the lead, 71-70 and Kalee Fowler’s free throw with 4 seconds left in the game would end the Eagle run and ending their five game losing streak.

Mariah Stacona led Northwest U (7-15, 4-9 CCC) with 25 points, 6 assists and 8 steals to lead the Eagles. Freshman Andie Kristinat added 16 points going 4 for 7 from the 3-point line. NU shot 43% for the game and 43% from the 3-point line.

Corban (10-12, 6-9 CCC) was led by Maci Bozett’s 14 points with Shaelie Burgess adding 12 points. The Warriors out rebounded Northwest U, 45-35 with 17 offensive rebounds and shot 42% for the game and 85% from the free throw line (11-13).
