Storm defeat Sun in inaugural Commissioner’s Cup Championship, Stewart named MVP

Five days after helping the U.S. win its seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal, Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd added an inaugural WNBA Commissioner’s Cup to their resumes.

The inaugural prize pool was $500,000. The winning team’s players will make at least $30,000 — more than half of what players on four-year rookie contracts make in an entire season. Players on the losing team will pocket $10,000 each, and the game’s MVP will receive an additional $5,000.

Breanna Stewart led the way with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Jewell Loyd added 16 points and Sue Bird chipped in 10 points and five assist. Stewart came out hot, scoring 15 of her 17 in the first quarter. She was named MVP of the game.
